Helpful tips for getting around the U.P.
We’re often asked for helpful tips for getting around & where there a few quirky things you should be prepared for, it’s really not that different from any other travel
.
- Know you are near where Central/Eastern Time zones meet
- If you don’t have Verizon, or a carrier that uses Verizon towers, bring a paper map
- If you are traveling by snowmobile, be aware that we are a border town. Rental sleds have both MI and WI trail passes
- If planning on buying a WI trail pass it may be you need to order online and get sticker in the mail - if you buy local, you’ll get only paperwork which could end up being asked to show paperwork
- Yes, Michigan legalized recreational marijuana. However... this does not apply to federally or state property. National and state parks are off limits. Know the laws.
- We are the Home to county sheriffs, city police and a state trooper training facility as well as the Gogebic and iron county jails. Please do not drink & drive. Cabs are fast and always available. Party smart.
- We get a LOT of snow and here, we wait til the plow passes & then all is well. Our plow drivers are exceptional. Plan ahead with the winter safety items you know to have on board especially if traveling in remote areas. Same with backcountry or trail traveling. Weather van change at the drop of a hat. Plan for that.
Local Travel
Cell coverage is best with VERIZON and carriers operating off Verizon towers. We are easily found on GPS,Google Maps and if concerned, print directions or buy a paper map.It’s not Siberia, but there may be a few short spots where coverage gets spotty when traveling around. For instance, if skiing at Big Powderhorn it’s simple to jump on WiFi as a guest but cell may not have the best coverage.
Eastern/Central time zone division is the Gogebic County line so if traveling North you could drive in & out of Eastern Time zone. In fact Hoop n Holler bar claims the last barstool is Eastern Time. It’s common your phone might be using a tower nearby but in the other zone. If you’re surprised it’s so late, chances are it’s not...really.
Cabs; Mr Cab and TwinCity can are most commonly used.
FLY 'N RIDE or Drive.. plenty of parking for trailers and toys
Gogebic Airport now offering service from Minneapolis with 2 flights / day with Boutique Air just down the road from the Lodge.
With an hour flight, you can get a full day on the slopes or backcountry snowmobiling !
